Location and setting

Bakhtiyarpur is situated on the southern bank of the Ganges in the Patna district, roughly midway between Patna and Mokama. The station lies along National Highway 31 and acts as a feeder point for travel into the Magadh region, including the historical site of Rajgir and the Buddhist circuit beyond.

Lines and connectivity

The station sits on the heavily trafficked Howrah–Delhi main line, which carries a large number of long-distance passenger and freight services across northern and eastern India. From Bakhtiyarpur, a branch line runs southward through Bihar Sharif and Rajgir to Tilaiya, providing rail access to towns in Nalanda district and connecting the main line with the Gaya–Kiul section.

Background

Rail service through Bakhtiyarpur dates to the development of the East Indian Railway's main route between Howrah and Delhi in the second half of the nineteenth century. The branch towards Bihar Sharif and Rajgir, originally constructed as a narrow-gauge line, was later converted to broad gauge as part of Indian Railways' Project Unigauge programme, expanding through-services from the main line into the interior of Nalanda district.

Services

The station handles a mix of express, mail and passenger trains. In addition to long-distance services that halt while running on the main line, it serves as the originating or terminating point for several local passenger trains operating on the branch towards Rajgir and Tilaiya. Suburban-style EMU/MEMU services link Bakhtiyarpur with Patna Junction and other stations in the Danapur division.

Significance

As a junction station, Bakhtiyarpur is important for movement between the Ganges plain trunk route and the Buddhist heritage destinations of Nalanda and Rajgir. It also functions as a commuter node for Patna, given its position on the city's eastern approach corridor.
