Background

The Namma Metro is operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka. The Purple Line is the east–west corridor of the network, originally planned to run between Baiyappanahalli in the east and Mysuru Road in the west. Baiyappanahalli was selected as the eastern terminal of the first operational stretch because of the availability of land for a depot adjoining the station.

History

Baiyappanahalli was part of Reach 1, the very first stretch of Namma Metro to enter commercial service. The section between Baiyappanahalli and M. G. Road was inaugurated in October 2011, marking the beginning of metro operations in Bengaluru and making Namma Metro the second operational metro system in southern India after the Chennai suburban network's later metro counterpart.

For more than a decade, Baiyappanahalli served as the eastern terminus of the Purple Line. With the phased opening of the Purple Line extension towards Whitefield (Kadugodi), through services were extended beyond Baiyappanahalli, and the station ceased to function as a terminal. The fully integrated Purple Line, running from Challaghatta in the west to Whitefield in the east, was commissioned in stages, with end-to-end operations achieved in 2023.

Layout and facilities

The station is elevated, with a concourse level housing ticketing, automatic fare collection gates, and security check facilities, and a platform level above. It is equipped with lifts and escalators in line with the standard design adopted for Namma Metro stations. Adjacent to the station is the Baiyappanahalli depot, the principal maintenance and stabling depot for the Purple Line rolling stock.

Connectivity

Baiyappanahalli is one of the major multi-modal interchange points in eastern Bengaluru. It is situated close to the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (Baiyappanahalli railway terminal), a coaching terminal of South Western Railway intended to relieve pressure on Bengaluru's main railway stations. Bus services operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) connect the station to surrounding localities including Indiranagar, K. R. Puram, and Old Madras Road.

Significance

As part of the inaugural stretch of Namma Metro, Baiyappanahalli holds a notable place in the history of urban transit in Bengaluru. Its proximity to the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal also positions it as an important node for integrating metro travel with Indian Railways' long-distance services, supporting last-mile connectivity for rail passengers entering and leaving the city.
