Geography
Bairgania is located on the alluvial plains of north Bihar, in a low-lying tract drained by tributaries of the Bagmati river system. The terrain is flat and agricultural, and the town lies near the Indo-Nepal border, with adjoining areas extending into Nepal's Rautahat and adjacent districts. The region is prone to seasonal flooding during the monsoon, a recurring concern for settlements along the Bagmati and its associated channels.
Administration
Bairgania functions as an urban local body within the Sitamarhi district administration. The wider district is part of the Tirhut administrative division of Bihar. Bairgania is also the headquarters of a community development block of the same name, which administers a cluster of surrounding villages.
Transport
Bairgania is served by Bairgania railway station on the East Central Railway zone of Indian Railways, on the line connecting Sitamarhi with Raxaul, an important rail route in north Bihar that links onward to Narkatiaganj and other junctions. Road connectivity links the town with Sitamarhi to the south and with the border crossings to the north. The nearest major rail and road border node is at Raxaul, which connects to Birgunj in Nepal.
Economy
The local economy is predominantly agrarian, with paddy, wheat, maize, sugarcane, pulses and oilseeds being typical crops of the surrounding plains. Bairgania also functions as a small market town for nearby villages, with retail trade, agricultural produce markets and cross-border movement of goods and people contributing to economic activity.
Demographics and culture
The population is predominantly Maithili- and Hindi-speaking, with Bhojpuri also in use. Cultural life reflects the broader Mithila tradition of north Bihar, including festivals such as Chhath, Holi, Durga Puja and local fairs. The proximity to Nepal lends a mixed border character to social and commercial life.
