Bairabi railway station

Bairabi railway station is a railway station located in Kolasib district of the Indian state of Mizoram. It serves the town of Bairabi, which lies near the border between Mizoram and Assam, and is operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone of Indian Railways.

Background

For many years, Bairabi remained the only operational railway station in Mizoram, making it the principal rail entry point into the state. The station is situated in the northern part of Mizoram, close to the Assam border, and connects the region to the broader Indian Railways network through links into Assam.

Originally built as a metre-gauge terminus, the line serving Bairabi was later converted to broad gauge as part of the Indian Railways' Project Unigauge programme, which aimed to bring the Northeast region onto the broad-gauge network. Following the conversion, broad-gauge services were extended to Bairabi, improving its connectivity with major cities elsewhere in India.

Significance

Bairabi has held particular importance as a logistical and passenger gateway for Mizoram, a state with historically limited rail infrastructure due to its hilly terrain. The station has also served as the starting point for the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a project undertaken to extend rail connectivity southward towards Sairang, near the state capital Aizawl. The project, executed under the Northeast Frontier Railway, involves significant engineering works including numerous tunnels, bridges and viaducts through mountainous terrain.

Connectivity

The station is linked by rail to stations in Assam, with onward connections to other parts of India. Road links from Bairabi connect the town to Kolasib and further south to Aizawl via the National Highway network.
