Bahraich railway station is a railway station serving the town of Bahraich, the headquarters of Bahraich district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Overview

The station lies on the Gonda–Bahraich line and is connected through metre-gauge and converted broad-gauge routes that historically linked the Terai region with the Awadh plains. It serves as a junction with lines extending towards Gonda, Nanpara, Mailani and onward into the Tarai belt.

Background

Bahraich is one of the older settlements of the Awadh region, situated near the Ghaghara river and close to the Indo-Nepal border. The railway reached Bahraich during the period of the Bengal and North Western Railway, which laid extensive metre-gauge networks across northern Uttar Pradesh in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After Indian Railways was reorganised, the station came under the administrative control of the North Eastern Railway zone with its headquarters at Gorakhpur.

Lines and connectivity

Gonda–Bahraich section: provides the main link to Gonda Junction, which is a major hub on the Lucknow–Gorakhpur main line.
Bahraich–Nanpara–Mailani route: extends north and west towards the Tarai belt, historically a metre-gauge line that has been progressively converted to broad gauge under Indian Railways' Project Unigauge.

Gauge conversion

The lines associated with Bahraich were originally laid as metre gauge. As part of the broader gauge conversion programme on the North Eastern Railway, the section connecting Bahraich with Gonda and onwards has been converted to broad gauge, allowing direct services from Bahraich to other parts of the Indian Railways broad-gauge network.

Significance

The station is important for passenger traffic from Bahraich district, which has a large rural population dependent on rail connectivity for travel to Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Delhi. It also serves pilgrims travelling to religious sites in the region, including the dargah of Syed Salar Masud Ghazi in Bahraich town. Goods traffic from the agricultural hinterland, particularly sugarcane and foodgrains, is handled in the area.
