Overview

Bagnan station lies between Howrah Junction and Kharagpur Junction on one of the busiest suburban and long-distance corridors in eastern India. It functions both as a halt for local EMU services operating out of Howrah and as a stopping point for several mail and express trains running on the route.

Background

The Howrah–Kharagpur section was originally developed by the Bengal Nagpur Railway in the late nineteenth century to connect Calcutta with the Central Provinces and the western coast. After the reorganisation of Indian Railways, the line came under the Eastern Railway and subsequently under the South Eastern Railway zone, which was formed in 1955.

The route through Bagnan was electrified as part of the wider electrification of the Howrah–Kharagpur corridor, which enabled the introduction of electric multiple unit (EMU) suburban services from Howrah.

Services

The station handles a high volume of suburban EMU traffic on the Howrah–Kharagpur and Howrah–Mecheda–Panskura routes, in addition to halts of selected express trains. Bagnan is a regular terminating and originating point for some Howrah-bound local trains, in addition to through services running to Panskura, Mecheda, Kharagpur and Midnapore.

Layout

The station has multiple platforms serving up and down lines on the double-track electrified main route. Standard passenger amenities include ticket counters, waiting facilities and a foot overbridge connecting the platforms.

Significance

Bagnan is an important node for daily commuters travelling to Howrah and Kolkata for work and education. It also serves the agrarian and small-industrial belt around Bagnan town, providing connectivity for the movement of people and goods within Howrah district.
