Location and access
Baghajatin lies between Jadavpur and Patuli stations on the Sealdah South line. The station serves a densely populated residential belt that includes Baghajatin Colony, Patuli, Bijoygarh and parts of Jadavpur. Local road connectivity is provided through Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick Road and the area's link to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
Background
The Sealdah South section, on which Baghajatin is situated, has its origins in the lines built in the 19th century to connect Calcutta with the southern districts of Bengal. The section was electrified in stages during the 20th century, enabling the introduction of EMU services that today carry a substantial share of suburban commuters in the Kolkata metropolitan region.
Services
- Suburban EMU services on the Sealdah–Budge Budge, Sealdah–Baruipur, Sealdah–Lakshmikantapur, Sealdah–Canning, Sealdah–Diamond Harbour and Sealdah–Namkhana routes.
- The station handles primarily passenger traffic; long-distance trains generally pass through without halting.
Significance
As one of the busy halts on the Sealdah South section, Baghajatin railway station forms an important component of the daily commute for residents of southern Kolkata travelling to the central business district around Sealdah and BBD Bagh. It also acts as a feeder point for educational institutions in the Jadavpur–Baghajatin belt, including Jadavpur University.
