Location and layout
Badnera is situated about 8 kilometres south of Amravati city. Because the trunk route between Bhusawal and Nagpur bypasses Amravati, Badnera developed historically as the main interchange station for travellers to and from Amravati, with a short branch line connecting the two. The junction has multiple platforms handling through traffic on the main line as well as services originating or terminating on the Amravati branch.
History
The line through Badnera was constructed in the second half of the 19th century by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) as part of its eastward extension from Bhusawal towards Nagpur, linking Bombay (Mumbai) with central and eastern India. After the reorganisation of Indian Railways in 1951, the route became part of the newly formed Central Railway zone. The branch from Badnera to Amravati allowed cotton, a major commercial crop of the Berar region, to reach the trunk line for onward despatch to the mills of Bombay, and this trade was central to the early importance of the station.
Services
The junction is a stop for a large number of long-distance mail, express and superfast trains running between Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Howrah, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad and other major cities. Passenger and MEMU services connect Badnera with Amravati, Akola, Wardha, Nagpur and Bhusawal. The line is fully electrified, and the section is double tracked.
Significance
Badnera Junction is the principal gateway by rail for Amravati, one of the larger cities of the Vidarbha region, and serves a wide hinterland of agricultural and trading centres in western Vidarbha. Its position on the high-density Mumbai–Nagpur corridor makes it an operationally important station for both passenger movement and freight, particularly agricultural produce.
