Mohammad Babar Azam (born 15 October 1994) is a Pakistani international cricketer and a former captain of the Pakistan national team across all three formats of the game. A right-handed top-order batter, he is regarded among the leading batters of his generation in Pakistan cricket.

Background

Babar Azam came through the Pakistan domestic system as a specialist top-order batter. He developed a reputation for orthodox stroke play and consistency in limited-overs cricket before establishing himself in the Test side as well.

Career

International cricket

Azam represents Pakistan in international cricket and has played in all three formats — Test matches, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. He was part of the Pakistan squad that won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, the country's first title in that tournament.

He went on to captain the Pakistan national side in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, before relinquishing the captaincy in all formats.

Franchise cricket

In domestic Twenty20 cricket, Babar Azam captains Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League.

Significance

As a top-order batter and former captain of Pakistan in every format, Babar Azam has been a central figure in the country's cricketing setup. His role in the 2017 Champions Trophy-winning squad and his subsequent leadership of the national team mark him as one of the prominent Pakistani cricketers of the late 2010s and early 2020s.
