Background
The university was established by an Act of the Jammu and Kashmir state legislature to expand access to higher education in the Pir Panjal region, which had historically lacked a university-level institution. Rajouri, where the campus is situated, lies in the southern part of the Pir Panjal range and is connected to Jammu by the Mughal Road and the Jammu–Poonch highway.
Academics
BGSBU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across a range of disciplines. Its academic structure is organised into schools and departments covering areas such as engineering and technology, business studies, education, law, mathematical sciences, biosciences and biotechnology, computer sciences, languages and literature, and Islamic studies. The university also offers programmes in regional and classical languages, reflecting the cultural composition of the area it serves.
Campus
The main campus is located at Rajouri and houses academic blocks, administrative offices, hostels, a central library, and sporting facilities. Being situated in the foothills of the Pir Panjal, the campus draws students primarily from Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, and other districts of Jammu and Kashmir, along with students from outside the Union Territory.
Significance
BGSBU is significant as one of the few state universities established with a specific developmental mandate for an under-served sub-region of Jammu and Kashmir. By providing professional and technical courses locally, it has contributed to reducing the migration of students from the Pir Panjal belt to other parts of the country for higher education. The university's offerings in Islamic studies, Arabic, and regional languages also support documentation and teaching of the cultural heritage of the region.
