Background
BMW entered the Indian market through the establishment of a wholly owned subsidiary, marking a shift from the earlier practice of selling imported vehicles through third-party importers. The subsidiary was set up to manage the brand's growing presence as the Indian luxury car segment expanded in the 2000s, alongside competitors such as Mercedes-Benz India and Audi India.
Manufacturing
BMW India's plant at Chennai assembles vehicles from CKD kits imported from BMW's global production network. Models assembled locally have included variants of the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3, X5 and X7, allowing the company to reduce import duties and offer more competitive pricing in the Indian market. The Chennai facility also localises a portion of components through Indian suppliers.
Sales and distribution
Vehicles are sold in India through a network of authorised dealerships in major metropolitan and tier-one cities. The MINI brand is distributed through selected BMW dealers, while BMW Motorrad operates dedicated motorcycle dealerships in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune. BMW Financial Services India provides retail financing and leasing for customers.
Product range
- BMW cars: sedans (3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series), Sports Activity Vehicles (X1, X3, X5, X7), coupés and convertibles, M performance models, and electric vehicles such as the iX and i7.
- MINI: the MINI Cooper hatchback, Convertible and Countryman are offered as imported models.
- BMW Motorrad: a range of motorcycles spanning the G 310 series (manufactured in India in collaboration with TVS Motor Company) to large-displacement touring, sport and adventure bikes.
Collaboration with TVS Motor
BMW Motorrad and TVS Motor Company entered into a long-term partnership for the joint development and manufacture of sub-500 cc motorcycles. The resulting models, including the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS, are produced at TVS's Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu and exported globally, while also being sold in India through the BMW Motorrad network.
Significance
BMW India is one of the principal participants in the Indian luxury vehicle market, which forms a small but high-value segment of overall passenger vehicle sales in the country. Its local assembly operations have contributed to the development of luxury automotive manufacturing in Tamil Nadu, and its motorcycle collaboration with TVS represents one of the more prominent Indo-German partnerships in the two-wheeler industry.
