Overview

Azimganj City station is one of two stations serving the Azimganj area, the other being the larger Azimganj Junction. While Azimganj Junction functions as a junction point connecting routes towards Katwa, Nalhati and Murshidabad, the City station provides a halt closer to the urban core of Azimganj town. The station handles passenger services rather than long-distance express traffic.

Location and setting

Azimganj is a historic town in the Jiaganj Azimganj area of Murshidabad district, located on the right bank of the Bhagirathi (Hooghly) river opposite Jiaganj and not far from the historic capital city of Murshidabad. The town has long been associated with Jain merchant families and with the riverine trade economy of the lower Bengal plains. The railway station provides connectivity to nearby towns including Jiaganj, Murshidabad, Berhampore and Sainthia.

Background

Railway lines in the Murshidabad region developed during the colonial period as part of the wider expansion of the network across Bengal under the East Indian Railway and associated companies. After the reorganisation of Indian Railways in 1952, the lines passing through Azimganj came under the Eastern Railway zone, which continues to administer the station today.

Services

The station primarily caters to local passenger movement. Connectivity from Azimganj allows onward travel via Azimganj Junction to destinations across the broad-gauge network of Eastern Railway, including links towards Howrah, Sealdah, Rampurhat and Katwa.

Significance

Although a minor station in operational terms, Azimganj City railway station provides essential rail access to a town with significant historical and cultural importance in Bengal, including its association with Jain temples, riverside heritage and proximity to the monuments of nawabi Murshidabad.
