Overview
Azad Nagar is the second station from the western terminus at Versova, lying between Versova and D. N. Nagar. Like the rest of Line 1, it is operated by Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd., a public–private partnership originally led by Reliance Infrastructure with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Veolia Transport.
History
Construction of Line 1 began in 2008 under a concession agreement awarded by the MMRDA. The 11.4 km elevated corridor connecting Versova in the west to Ghatkopar in the east was inaugurated on 8 June 2014, with revenue services commencing the same day. Azad Nagar opened as part of this initial launch, becoming one of the twelve stations on Mumbai's first metro line.
Structure and facilities
The station is built above ground level on a viaduct running along Veera Desai Road. It has the standard layout of Line 1 stations, comprising a street-level entrance, a concourse with ticketing and security, and platforms on the upper level. Facilities include automatic fare collection gates, escalators, lifts for differently-abled passengers, and CCTV-based security.
Connections
The station is served by BEST bus services along Veera Desai Road and is within reach of auto-rickshaw stands. The nearest major suburban rail interchange on Line 1 is at Andheri, where commuters can transfer to the Mumbai Suburban Railway's Western Line.
Significance
Line 1 was the first operational metro corridor in Mumbai and significantly reduced east–west travel time across the suburbs, which earlier required indirect routes via the suburban rail network or congested arterial roads. Azad Nagar contributes to access for the densely populated residential pockets of Andheri West, including parts of Lokhandwala and Four Bungalows.
