It is situated on the broad-gauge railway corridor connecting Lucknow with Gorakhpur, and is in close proximity to the neighbouring station of Ayodhya Cantt (formerly Faizabad Junction), which is the larger administrative railhead of the area.

Services

Ayodhya Junction handles passenger, express and mail trains operated by Indian Railways. Because of the religious significance of Ayodhya, the station sees heavy seasonal pilgrim traffic, particularly during festivals such as Ram Navami, Deepotsav, Sawan Jhula Mela and Kartik Purnima, when special trains are commonly run to and from the station.

Redevelopment

The station has been redeveloped under the Indian Railways' station modernisation programme to handle higher passenger volumes connected with religious tourism in Ayodhya. The redevelopment included expansion of the station building, additional platforms, modern passenger amenities and concourse facilities. Following the upgrade, the station has been referred to in railway notifications as Ayodhya Dham Junction.

Significance

As one of the main railway gateways to Ayodhya, the station plays a central role in the movement of pilgrims to sites such as the Ram Janmabhoomi temple complex, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhavan and the ghats of the Sarayu. Its strategic location on the Lucknow–Gorakhpur route also gives it onward connections to major cities including Delhi, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna and Mumbai through through-running long-distance services.
