Sable was born in the village of Mandwa in Beed district of Maharashtra, in a family of farmers. He joined the Indian Army's 5 Mahar Regiment in 2012 and served in postings including Siachen and Rajasthan before being encouraged to take up athletics through inter-services competitions. He began competitive running relatively late, around 2015, and shifted from cross-country to the steeplechase under coach Amrish Kumar.
Career
Early national success
Sable came to wider notice at the 2018 Open National Championships and went on to break the long-standing Indian national record in the 3000 m steeplechase, originally held by Gopal Saini since 1981. He has since rewritten the national record on multiple occasions.
2019 World Championships
At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Sable improved the Indian record twice — first in the heats and then in the final — finishing 13th overall. The performance earned him qualification for the Tokyo Olympics.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics
At the Tokyo Olympic Games (held in 2021), Sable competed in the men's 3000 m steeplechase, again breaking his own national record in the heats, although he did not progress to the final.
2022 season
Sable had a breakthrough season in 2022. At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, he won the silver medal in the men's 3000 m steeplechase, becoming the first non-Kenyan in 28 years to win a medal in the event at the Games. Later that year at the Asian Games preparation phase and meets in the United States and Europe, he continued to lower his personal best. At the 2022 Diamond League events, he became the first Indian to break the 8:12 barrier in the steeplechase.
2023 Asian Games
At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou (held in 2023), Sable won the gold medal in the men's 3000 m steeplechase, setting a Games record. He also contributed to India's medal tally in the 5000 m, where he won a silver.
Marathon and 2024 Olympics
Sable made his marathon debut and ran a sub-2:10 timing in early 2024, setting an Indian national record in the marathon. He represented India at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the 3000 m steeplechase.

- Commonwealth Games silver medallist (2022).
- Asian Games gold and silver medallist (2023).
Significance
Sable's career marks a notable shift in Indian distance running, an area long dominated internationally by East African athletes. By taking the national 3000 m steeplechase record well below the previous benchmark and producing competitive performances at World Championships, Diamond League meetings and the Olympics, he has become a reference point for Indian middle- and long-distance prospects. His progression from an army jawan in Siachen to an international medallist is also frequently cited as an example of athletic talent identification through the armed forces.
