Background

ARAI was established as a co-operative venture between the Indian automotive industry and the Government of India to provide a common technical resource for research, development and certification. It is registered as a not-for-profit society and operates with members drawn from vehicle manufacturers, component makers and allied industries.

The association is one of the agencies notified by the Government of India under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules for type approval and homologation of motor vehicles, and contributes to the formulation of automotive standards through participation in technical committees.

Facilities

ARAI operates technical centres in and around Pune, including laboratories at Kothrud and a proving ground and Homologation and Technology Centre at Chakan. The facilities support full-vehicle and component-level testing across passenger cars, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, off-road vehicles and tractors.

Significance

ARAI plays a central role in implementing emission and safety regulations in India, including the progression to Bharat Stage emission standards. As a designated testing agency, its certification is a prerequisite for sale of new vehicle models in the country. The association also contributes to India's transition towards electric mobility through testing protocols, battery and charging system evaluation, and policy support.
