Background

The university takes its name from the Auniati Satra, founded in the seventeenth century on Majuli, the river island in the Brahmaputra. The Auniati Satra has historically been a centre of Assamese Vaishnavite religious practice, classical learning, manuscript preservation, and the performing arts associated with the Sattriya tradition.
