Atul Kulkarni is an Indian film and theatre actor who works primarily in Marathi and Hindi cinema, with notable contributions to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films. Known for his preference for character-driven roles, he has earned recognition for his performances in socially engaged and politically themed films.

Background and education

Kulkarni was born in Belgaum and raised in Solapur, Maharashtra. He completed his early education in Solapur and was active in theatre during his student years. He later trained at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi, which laid the foundation for his subsequent work in films and stage.

Career

Kulkarni made his film debut with the Marathi film Ghain and gained wider attention with Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram (2000), in which he played the role of Shriram Abhyankar. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for this performance. He received a second National Film Award for his role in the Marathi film Natarang (2010), directed by Ravi Jadhav, in which he portrayed a folk performer in a Tamasha troupe and underwent a significant physical transformation for the part.

His Hindi film credits include Chandni Bar (2001), Page 3 (2005), Rang De Basanti (2006), Khakee (2004), Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008), Dabangg 2 (2012), Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016) and Raid (2018). In Marathi, he has appeared in films such as Devrai, Valu, Sumbaran and Vazandar.

In south Indian cinema, his work includes Tamil and Telugu projects directed by major filmmakers, often in roles requiring strong dramatic presence. He has continued to work in theatre alongside film and has been associated with various stage productions in Marathi and Hindi.
