The narrative interweaves a present-day manhunt with a parallel storyline set in Varanasi, exploring the ideological roots of the antagonist. Themes of fate, free will, and the interpretation of good and evil run through both seasons.

Production
The show was developed by Gaurav Shukla, who had earlier worked as a writer in Hindi cinema. Season 1 was directed by Oni Sen, with cinematography that drew on locations in Varanasi to anchor the mythological subtext. The first season comprised eight episodes and was among the early Voot Select originals positioned to compete with established streaming thrillers in India. Season 2, also of eight episodes, expanded the universe with a more elaborate antagonist arc and additional Vedic and astronomical references.
Release and reception
Season 1 was released on Voot Select on 2 March 2020, shortly before the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, which contributed to a wider viewership during the period of restricted public activity. The series was widely discussed for its attempt to fuse procedural crime fiction with scriptural allusions, and for performances by Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti.
Season 2 was released on 1 June 2023 on JioCinema, following the merger of Voot with the platform. It received attention for its denser mythology and longer runtime per episode.
Significance
Asur is regarded as one of the notable Indian streaming thrillers to attempt a sustained engagement with Hindu mythology in a contemporary investigative framework, distinguishing it from the more politically or crime-syndicate-oriented Hindi originals that dominated the early streaming era in India. It is frequently cited in discussions of genre experimentation in Indian OTT content between 2018 and 2023.
