Assam University is a central public university located in Silchar, Assam, India. Established in 1994 by an Act of the Parliament of India, it is the second central university to be set up in Assam, alongside Tezpur University, which was also established in the same year.

Background

Assam University functions under the central university system of India. The President of India serves as the Visitor of the university, while the Governor of Assam acts as the Chief Rector. Former Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha serves as the Chancellor. Professor Rajive Mohan Pant succeeded Professor Dilip Chandra Nath as the Vice-Chancellor of the university.

International affiliations

Reflecting its commitment to educational and social responsibilities, Assam University is an institutional signatory to the Global Universities Network for Innovation (GUNI), based in Barcelona, and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

Significance

As one of the two central universities established in Assam in 1994, Assam University plays an important role in higher education in the Barak Valley region of southern Assam, providing affiliating and teaching functions across a wide range of academic disciplines.
