Overview
Asin Thottumkal, known mononymously as Asin, is an Indian former actress who worked predominantly in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi cinema between 2001 and 2015. Trained in classical Bharatanatyam, she emerged as one of the leading South Indian heroines of the mid-2000s before transitioning to a successful, though brief, career in Bollywood. She is best remembered for her debut Hindi film Ghajini (2008), opposite Aamir Khan, which became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its time.

Early Life and Background
Asin was born on 26 October 1985 in Kochi, Kerala, into a Syrian Catholic family. Her father, Joseph Thottumkal, is a businessman, and her mother, Seline, comes from Thrissur. She studied at St. Teresa's Convent Girls Higher Secondary School in Ernakulam and later attended St. Teresa's College. She trained in Bharatanatyam from a young age and used the stage name "Asin" professionally.
Acting Career
Malayalam beginnings (2001–2003)
Asin made her acting debut at the age of fifteen with the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001). She subsequently appeared in a handful of Malayalam productions and a Telugu film, Sikindar (2003), but did not achieve immediate stardom in her home industry.
Telugu and Tamil success (2003–2008)
Her career trajectory shifted with the Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi (2003), directed by Puri Jagannadh and co-starring Ravi Teja, which became a major commercial success. She quickly became one of the most sought-after heroines in Telugu and Tamil cinema, with films such as M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004), Ghajini (2005, Tamil), Sivakasi (2005), Varalaru (2006), Pokkiri (2007) and Dasavathaaram (2008).
The Tamil Ghajini, directed by A. R. Murugadoss and co-starring Suriya, was a landmark in her career and won her the Filmfare Award South for Best Actress (Tamil) in 2006.
Hindi cinema (2008–2015)
Asin reprised her role from the Tamil Ghajini in the 2008 Hindi remake of the same name, again directed by A. R. Murugadoss, opposite Aamir Khan. The film became the first Indian film to gross over ₹100 crore at the domestic box office and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
She subsequently appeared in London Dreams (2009), Ready (2011) opposite Salman Khan, Housefull 2 (2012), Bol Bachchan (2012), Khiladi 786 (2012) and All Is Well (2015), her final film before retiring from acting.
Personal Life
On 19 January 2016, Asin married Rahul Sharma, co-founder of the mobile phone company Micromax Informatics, in a Christian ceremony in Delhi followed by a Hindu ceremony. The couple's daughter, Arin, was born in October 2017. Following her marriage, Asin retired from films and has largely stayed away from public life.
