Overview

Asangaon is one of the suburban stations on the eastern arm of the Central Line, located between Atgaon and Vasind. It functions as a key origin and terminating point for many local services on the Kasara branch, since several Mumbai suburban trains short-terminate at Asangaon rather than continuing up the ghat to Kasara. The station handles both suburban EMU services and a number of mail and express trains that pass through the section.

Location and setting

The station lies in the predominantly rural belt of Shahapur taluka, with the surrounding region forming part of the catchment area of the Bhatsa river. It is one of the outermost stations within the Mumbai suburban network and acts as a gateway between the densely populated suburban belt around Kalyan and the more sparsely populated areas leading up to the Western Ghats at Kasara.

Services

  • Suburban EMU services on the Mumbai CSMT–Kalyan–Asangaon–Kasara route operated by Central Railway.
  • Several local trains originate from or terminate at Asangaon, providing additional frequency to and from Mumbai during peak hours.
  • Long-distance mail and express trains operating on the Mumbai–Bhusaval–Nagpur and Mumbai–Howrah corridors pass through, though most do not halt here.

Layout

The station has multiple platforms serving suburban as well as through traffic, with footover bridges connecting them. Standard passenger amenities include ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines, drinking water and seating areas. Beyond Asangaon, the line begins its climb on the Thal Ghat (Kasara Ghat) section towards Igatpuri.

Significance

Asangaon is notable as a regular short-terminating point on the Kasara branch, helping balance suburban frequencies between the heavily used Kalyan section and the lower-density ghat section. It also serves pilgrims and visitors travelling to nearby destinations in Shahapur taluka, including religious sites and the Bhatsa dam area.
