He was called to the Bar from one of the Inns of Court in London, after which he returned to India to begin his professional career.
Career
Legal scholarship and teaching
Fyzee combined legal practice with academic work, focusing on Islamic jurisprudence and its application within the Indian legal system. His writings sought to present Muslim personal law in a systematic, modern and reasoned form accessible to both lawyers and scholars. Outlines of Muhammadan Law, first published by Oxford University Press, went through several editions and remains widely cited in Indian courts and universities.
He was associated with legal education in Bombay and lectured on Islamic law at Indian and foreign universities. He took a strong scholarly interest in Ismaili and Fatimid studies, editing and translating early Ismaili legal and theological texts, including works of the Fatimid jurist al-Qadi al-Nu'man.
Diplomatic service
After Indian independence in 1947, Fyzee was appointed as India's Ambassador to Egypt, serving in Cairo in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His tenure helped establish early diplomatic and cultural ties between independent India and Egypt.
Academic administration
On returning to academic life, Fyzee served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu and Kashmir at Srinagar. He was also associated with the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, as a fellow, where he pursued research on Islamic legal and intellectual history.
