Background

Nagwaswalla hails from Nargol, a coastal village in the Valsad district of Gujarat with a long-standing Parsi heritage. He grew up playing cricket locally before progressing through Gujarat's age-group system and into senior state cricket. His emergence drew particular attention as Parsi representation in Indian first-class cricket had been limited in recent decades, despite the community's pioneering role in the early history of Indian cricket.

Domestic career

He made his first-class debut for Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy and quickly established himself as a frontline pace bowler in the side. Bowling left-arm seam, he has been used to exploit angles created by the cross-seam delivery against right-handed batters and to bring the ball back into left-handers. He has also featured for Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20).

India call-up

Nagwaswalla was named in India's standby player group for the tour of England in 2021, which included the World Test Championship Final against New Zealand and the subsequent Test series. He was added to the standbys alongside players such as Abhimanyu Easwaran and Prasidh Krishna. Although he did not make his international debut on the tour, the selection was widely regarded as a notable milestone, given his background and his status as a left-arm seam option in a pace attack dominated by right-armers.

Style and significance

As a left-arm medium-fast bowler, Nagwaswalla offers variation that is relatively scarce in Indian pace bowling. His selection in the India squad shadow group was noted in the cricket press as the first instance in many years of a Parsi cricketer being so close to senior international selection, drawing comparisons in commentary with the historical contribution of Parsi cricketers such as the early touring teams of the late nineteenth century.
