Arumbakkam

Arumbakkam is a residential and commercial neighbourhood in the western part of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, India. Located along the Poonamallee High Road corridor, it forms part of the Greater Chennai metropolitan area and is administratively included within the Chennai district.

Geography

Arumbakkam lies in western Chennai and is bordered by neighbourhoods such as Aminjikarai, Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, and Nungambakkam. The locality is bisected by major arterial roads and sits close to the Koyambedu junction, one of the principal road and transit hubs of the city. The Cooum river passes near the southern edge of the neighbourhood.

Civic administration

Arumbakkam is administered by the Greater Chennai Corporation. For state legislative purposes, the area falls within constituencies in the Chennai region, and for parliamentary elections it is part of the Central Chennai parliamentary constituency.

Transport

The neighbourhood is served by the Arumbakkam metro station on the Blue Line of the Chennai Metro, which connects it to Washermenpet, the Chennai International Airport, and other parts of the city. Bus connectivity is provided by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), with several routes operating along Poonamallee High Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road. The Koyambedu bus terminus, one of the largest bus stations in Asia, is in the immediate vicinity, as is the Koyambedu wholesale market complex.

Demographics and character

Arumbakkam is largely a mixed residential locality with apartments, independent houses, and Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) layouts. The presence of Koyambedu nearby has supported the growth of small-scale commerce, eateries, and service establishments along the main roads. The neighbourhood has a mix of long-settled middle-class families and newer residents drawn by metro connectivity.
