Background
The Red Line was the first corridor of the Delhi Metro to open for public service, originally running between Shahdara and Tis Hazari from December 2002. Over the years, the line was progressively extended westward to Rithala and eastward into Ghaziabad. Arthala forms part of the eastern extension that took the metro network beyond the boundaries of the National Capital Territory of Delhi into Uttar Pradesh.
Extension into Ghaziabad
The eastern extension of the Red Line from Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda (Ghaziabad) added several new stations, including Arthala, bringing rapid transit to the rapidly urbanising trans-Hindon region of Ghaziabad. The corridor is built as an elevated viaduct along the alignment connecting Sahibabad and central Ghaziabad. The extension was a joint initiative involving the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the Ghaziabad Development Authority, and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
Station layout
Arthala is an elevated station with a standard DMRC configuration: a street-level entry/exit, a concourse level housing ticketing, security screening and customer service facilities, and a platform level above. The station has side platforms serving trains in either direction along the Red Line.
Connectivity
The station provides access to residential colonies and commercial pockets in Sahibabad and the surrounding industrial belt of Ghaziabad. Feeder services, auto-rickshaws and city buses link the station to nearby neighbourhoods. The station is integrated with the wider Delhi Metro network, allowing onward travel to interchange points such as Kashmere Gate and Inderlok for connections to other lines.
Significance
Arthala is one of the metro stations that extended Delhi Metro services into Uttar Pradesh, supporting the daily commute of workers travelling between Ghaziabad and Delhi. It contributes to reducing road congestion on the Delhi–Ghaziabad corridor and supports transit-oriented development in Sahibabad.
