Background

Arshdeep Singh was born on 5 February 1999. He grew up in a Punjabi Sikh family and was raised primarily in Chandigarh, where he developed his cricket through age-group competitions in Punjab. He came through the Punjab youth system as a left-arm pace bowler, a relatively rare profile in Indian cricket, which contributed to his early selection into representative sides.

Domestic and franchise career

Arshdeep represented India at the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, which India won under the captaincy of Prithvi Shaw. He was part of the bowling unit alongside teammates such as Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti.

He was signed by Kings XI Punjab in the 2019 IPL auction and made his IPL debut the same season. He continued with the franchise after its rebranding as Punjab Kings, establishing himself as a frontline bowler who is used in the powerplay and at the death. His ability to bowl yorkers consistently in the closing overs of T20 innings became a defining feature of his game.

International career

Arshdeep made his T20I debut for India in 2022 against Sri Lanka. He quickly became a regular in India's white-ball setup, particularly in the shortest format, and was selected for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia, where he was among India's leading wicket-takers.

He was part of the Indian squad that won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. He featured prominently in India's bowling attack throughout the tournament. He also made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India during this period.

Style and significance

Arshdeep is one of the few specialist left-arm seamers to gain a settled place in India's limited-overs sides in recent years. His skill set—new-ball swing, variation in pace, and yorker accuracy at the death—has filled a longstanding need in the Indian T20I attack previously associated with bowlers such as Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah (in a different role). His emergence has also been highlighted as part of the broader contribution of Punjab's cricketing talent pipeline to the national team.
