Background

Maini emerged from the Indian motorsport scene at a time when a small number of Indian drivers were progressing through European single-seater ladders. He moved to the United Kingdom and continental Europe to compete in junior categories, which is the conventional route for drivers targeting Formula 1 or top-line international racing.

Career

Junior single-seaters

Maini competed in karting before transitioning to car racing in Britain. He raced in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, where he was among the front-running drivers, and progressed to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, one of the most competitive junior categories on the European calendar.

GP3 and Formula 2

He moved up to the GP3 Series, the FIA-sanctioned support category to Formula 1, and subsequently raced in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, which replaced the GP2 Series as the principal feeder to Formula 1. During this period he was associated with the Haas F1 Team's young driver programme.

Sportscar and GT racing

After his single-seater years, Maini moved into GT and sportscar competition, racing in series such as the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) and in international endurance events. The shift mirrored a broader trend of single-seater graduates moving to manufacturer-backed GT programmes.

Significance

Maini is one of a relatively small group of Indian drivers to have competed at the FIA Formula 2 level, the immediate feeder to Formula 1.
