Background
Arcot Ramasamy Mudaliar belonged to a family that produced several public figures active in the political and administrative life of the Madras Presidency during the late colonial period. He was the twin brother of Arcot Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, an educationist and longtime Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras.
Public career
Mudaliar held the office of Diwan of Mysore, the senior-most administrative position in the princely state of Mysore, which advised the Maharaja on matters of governance. The Diwanship of Mysore was historically associated with significant administrative, industrial and educational initiatives in southern India.
Beyond his role in Mysore, he was active in legislative and political affairs in the Madras Presidency and was associated with the Justice Party, a political organisation that contested elections in the Presidency in the early twentieth century.

As Diwan of Mysore, Mudaliar occupied one of the most influential administrative posts in princely India.
