Location and setting

The station lies in the subdivisional town of Arambagh, in the south-western part of Hooghly district. Arambagh is a long-established commercial and agricultural centre on the right bank of the Dwarakeswar river, and the railway station serves both the town and the surrounding rural belt that extends towards the borders of Bankura and Paschim Medinipur districts.

Background

Arambagh remained without a direct rail link for a considerable period after independence, despite repeated demands for a connection to the broader network of the Eastern Railway. The line that brought rail services to the town forms part of the larger effort to extend connectivity to interior parts of southern West Bengal that had earlier depended primarily on road transport.

The station has been named after Prafulla Chandra Sen (popularly known as P. C. Sen), who served as Chief Minister of West Bengal in the 1960s and was closely associated with the Arambagh region through his political and constructive social work, including his involvement with the Gandhian movement in the area sometimes referred to as "Arambagh Gandhibad".

Significance

The station is significant as the principal railhead for Arambagh subdivision, providing residents access to the wider Indian Railways network and reducing dependence on long-distance road journeys to Howrah, Tarakeswar and other regional hubs. It supports daily commuter movement, especially for those travelling towards Kolkata for work, education, healthcare and trade.
