Overview
Apta is a wayside station situated between Panvel and Roha, the two anchor points of the northern stretch of the Konkan Railway. The Panvel–Roha line connects the suburban network of the Mumbai region with the Konkan coastal corridor, which extends southwards through Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. As an intermediate halt, Apta primarily caters to local commuter traffic and passenger services, while most long-distance Konkan Railway expresses pass through without stopping.
Location and connectivity
The station lies in the hinterland of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, near the industrial belt of Khopoli and Khalapur. By road, it is accessible from the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Mumbai–Goa highway (NH 66) corridor through Panvel. The nearest major junctions on the line are Panvel Junction to the north and Roha to the south.
Background
The Panvel–Roha section, on which Apta is situated, was constructed as part of the broader effort to link the western coast of India by rail. This section pre-dates the completion of the Konkan Railway south of Roha and was later integrated into the unified Konkan corridor when the line through to Mangaluru was commissioned in the 1990s by the Konkan Railway Corporation. The section has since been electrified, allowing electric traction for both passenger and freight services.
Services
Apta is served chiefly by passenger and MEMU services operating between Panvel, Pen, Roha and intermediate stations. The station handles a modest volume of daily commuters travelling towards Panvel and onward to Mumbai for work and education.
