Background

Anuradha Patel belongs to the Ganguly–Patel family that has had a long association with Hindi cinema. Her grand-uncles include the actors Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar, the last of whom was also among the most popular playback singers of Hindi film music. This family connection placed her within the wider Bombay film community from an early stage of her career.

Career

Patel began acting in the 1980s, a period when Hindi cinema was simultaneously producing parallel cinema and mainstream commercial films. She appeared in roles that ranged across both streams, working with directors associated with middle-of-the-road and art cinema as well as in standard commercial features.

She is most widely recognised for her performance in Ijaazat (1987), directed by Gulzar, in which she appeared opposite Naseeruddin Shah alongside Rekha and Anuradha Patel's role of Maya gave the film much of its emotional core. The film, based on a story by Subodh Ghosh, became a notable work of late-1980s Hindi cinema and is remembered for its R. D. Burman score and Asha Bhosle's renditions of Gulzar's lyrics.

In addition to films, she also took up television assignments during the expansion of Indian television drama in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Significance

Although her filmography is relatively compact, Patel's work in Ijaazat in particular has ensured continued recognition among audiences and critics interested in Gulzar's cinema and in the parallel film movement of the 1980s. She is often cited as part of the extended Ganguly acting lineage in Hindi cinema.
