Background

Sinha trained as an engineer before moving into media. He entered the entertainment industry through Indian television in the 1990s, directing music videos and serials during the early years of satellite television in India. This grounding in popular formats shaped his early film-making, which leaned toward mainstream genres.

Career

Television and early work

Sinha directed television serials in the 1990s, including work for channels that were part of the early cable and satellite boom. He also directed several music videos during the Indipop wave of that decade.

Early film career

His feature film debut, Tum Bin... Love Will Find a Way (2001), a romantic drama with a fresh cast, became a sleeper hit and remains his best-known early work. He followed it with films such as Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai (2003), Dus (2005), and Cash (2007), working largely within commercial action and thriller idioms.

Big-budget productions

In 2011, Sinha directed Ra.One, a science-fiction superhero film starring Shah Rukh Khan, which was among the most expensive Indian films of its time. He subsequently made Gulaab Gang (2014) and Tum Bin 2 (2016).

Shift to social drama

From 2018 onwards, Sinha's work pivoted toward issue-driven cinema:

  • Mulk (2018): A courtroom drama on communal identity and citizenship, starring Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu.
  • Article 15 (2019): A police procedural inspired by caste-based violence, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, named after the anti-discrimination provision of the Constitution of India.
  • Thappad (2020): A drama on domestic violence and marital inequality, starring Taapsee Pannu.
  • Anek (2022): Set against insurgency and identity politics in North-East India.
  • Bheed (2023): A black-and-white film set during the migrant exodus following the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020.

Web series

In 2024, Sinha directed IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, a Netflix series dramatising the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814.

Production work

Sinha runs the production house Benaras Mediaworks, under which he has produced his own directorial ventures and backed projects by other filmmakers. The company has been associated with films such as Mulk, Article 15, Thappad, and Bheed, as well as productions including Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai-themed work and the Hansal Mehta-directed Faraaz (2023), which Sinha co-produced.

Themes and significance

Sinha's later films are frequently grouped together as a body of work engaging with contemporary fault lines in Indian society — communal relations, caste, gender, regional identity, and migration. Critics have noted his attempt to combine mainstream stars and accessible storytelling with subject matter usually associated with independent cinema. The shift has been described as one of the more notable mid-career reinventions in twenty-first-century Hindi film direction.

Public engagement

Sinha is active on social media and in public commentary on cinema and politics. He has co-edited, with the journalist Bharathi S. Pradhan, written collections reflecting on cinema and current affairs, and has spoken at film festivals and industry forums on issues of censorship, representation, and the role of popular cinema.
