Background
The university owes its origin to the philanthropist and banker Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, who founded a number of educational institutions in the early twentieth century at Chidambaram, a temple town historically associated with Tamil scholarship and the worship of Nataraja. These institutions, including Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College, and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College, were brought together to form the nucleus of Annamalai University.
The university was constituted by a special Act of the Madras Legislature, the Annamalai University Act, and began functioning as a teaching and residential university. Its founding aim was the promotion of Tamil language and culture alongside modern higher education, and it has historically been notable for its strong departments of Tamil studies, music, and the performing arts.
Campus and organisation
The campus at Annamalai Nagar is spread over a large contiguous tract on the outskirts of Chidambaram, comprising teaching faculties, halls of residence, libraries, laboratories, sports facilities, and a teaching hospital associated with the Faculty of Medicine. The university follows a faculty-and-department structure, with faculties covering:
- Arts
- Science

The Faculty of Marine Sciences, situated at Parangipettai (Porto Novo) on the Coromandel coast, is among the better-known centres for marine biology and coastal research in India. The Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital and the Rajah Muthiah Dental College, named after the founder's son Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar, function as constituent institutions providing clinical education and care.
Academics
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil., and doctoral programmes. In addition to conventional academic disciplines, it provides professional courses in engineering, agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, law, and education. Tamil studies, Sanskrit, music, and dance have remained traditional areas of strength, reflecting the founder's emphasis on Indian languages and culture.
Annamalai University also runs one of the largest distance education programmes in India through its Directorate of Distance Education, which has historically enrolled students from across the country and abroad.
