Andrew Balbirnie (born 28 December 1990) is an Irish cricketer who serves as the captain of the Ireland cricket team in Test cricket. A right-handed batsman who occasionally takes up wicket-keeping duties, Balbirnie has been one of the central figures in Irish cricket since the country's elevation to Test status, and was part of the historic Ireland XI that played the nation's inaugural Test match in May 2018.

International career

Ireland's inaugural Test

In May 2018, Balbirnie was one of the eleven cricketers selected to play in Ireland's first ever Test match, contested against Pakistan. The fixture marked Ireland's formal entry into the longest format of the international game.

Central contracts

In December 2018, Balbirnie was among 19 players awarded a central contract by Cricket Ireland for the 2019 season. In January 2020, he was again one of 19 players awarded a central contract by Cricket Ireland, with that year being the first in which all such contracts were issued on a full-time basis—an important step in the professionalisation of Irish cricket.

Captaincy

In November 2019, Balbirnie was named captain of Ireland's Test and One Day International (ODI) sides following the decision of William Porterfield to step down from the role. Later in the same month, he was additionally appointed captain of Ireland's Twenty20 International (T20I) team, replacing Gary Wilson, thereby taking charge of the national side across all three international formats.
