It was established under the Madras University Act and began functioning as a teaching and affiliating university for the Andhra region. The first Vice-Chancellor was C. R. Reddy, who played a central role in shaping its early academic structure. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, later President of India, also served as Vice-Chancellor of the university and contributed significantly to its institutional development.

Academic profile

The university offers programmes across the arts, sciences, engineering, technology, law, commerce, management and pharmaceutical sciences. Its constituent colleges include the College of Arts and Commerce, the College of Science and Technology, the College of Engineering and the College of Law. The university also operates a postgraduate centre at Tadepalligudem and other off-campus centres in north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra University functions as both a teaching and an affiliating university, with a number of colleges across districts of Andhra Pradesh affiliated to it for undergraduate and postgraduate instruction.

Campus

The main campus is spread over a large area in Visakhapatnam, with academic departments, hostels, sports facilities, a central library, and administrative buildings. The campus is known for its colonial-era architecture, particularly the main Arts College building, which is among the landmark structures of the city.

Research and significance

Andhra University has historically been associated with notable contributions in physics, chemistry, oceanography, marine sciences and engineering. The Department of Marine Living Resources and oceanographic studies have benefited from the university's coastal location. The institution has produced a number of prominent scholars, scientists, administrators and political figures in India.
