Background and early life
Ananya Panday was born in Mumbai into a film family. Her father, Chunky Panday, has been active in Hindi cinema since the late 1980s, and her uncle Chikki Panday is also associated with the industry; actress Ahaan Panday is a cousin and actor Ahaan Pandey's relations extend through the wider Pandey family. She studied at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai and briefly attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles before moving into acting.

Debut and early work
Panday made her acting debut in 2019 with Punit Malhotra's Student of the Year 2, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, opposite Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria. In the same year, she appeared in Pati Patni Aur Woh, a remake of the 1978 film of the same name, directed by Mudassar Aziz and co-starring Kartik Aaryan and Bhumi Pednekar. For her debut performances she received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut in 2020.

In 2020, she starred in Khaali Peeli, directed by Maqbool Khan, alongside Ishaan Khatter. She followed this with Gehraiyaan (2022), directed by Shakun Batra and produced by Dharma Productions, in which she appeared with Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Dhairya Karwa.
