She is the daughter of actor Chunky Panday and a member of a family with longstanding ties to the Indian film industry.

Background and early life

Ananya Panday was born in Mumbai into a film family. Her father, Chunky Panday, has been active in Hindi cinema since the late 1980s, and her uncle Chikki Panday is also associated with the industry; actress Ahaan Panday is a cousin and actor Ahaan Pandey's relations extend through the wider Pandey family. She studied at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai and briefly attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles before moving into acting.

Career

Debut and early work

Panday made her acting debut in 2019 with Punit Malhotra's Student of the Year 2, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, opposite Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria. In the same year, she appeared in Pati Patni Aur Woh, a remake of the 1978 film of the same name, directed by Mudassar Aziz and co-starring Kartik Aaryan and Bhumi Pednekar. For her debut performances she received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut in 2020.

Subsequent films

In 2020, she starred in Khaali Peeli, directed by Maqbool Khan, alongside Ishaan Khatter. She followed this with Gehraiyaan (2022), directed by Shakun Batra and produced by Dharma Productions, in which she appeared with Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Dhairya Karwa. The film, released on Amazon Prime Video, marked a shift towards more dramatic material in her filmography. In the same year she featured in Liger, a Pan-Indian bilingual sports drama directed by Puri Jagannadh, opposite Vijay Deverakonda.

She subsequently appeared in Dream Girl 2 (2023), directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa and co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana, and in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023), an Arjun Varain Singh-directed feature for Netflix produced under Tiger Baby Films and Excel Entertainment, with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Adarsh Gourav. In 2024, she headlined the Amazon Prime Video series Call Me Bae, created by Ishita Moitra, marking her debut in long-form streaming work.
