Background

He made his feature debut as a director with Strangers (2007), a thriller, before finding his distinctive voice with stories set in the Hindi heartland.
Career
Breakthrough with Tanu Weds Manu
Tanu Weds Manu (2011), starring R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut, was a commercial success and established Rai's signature style of small-town romance laced with humour. The film, written by Himanshu Sharma, drew attention for its Kanpur and Lucknow setting and its eccentric ensemble of characters.
Raanjhanaa
Raanjhanaa (2013) marked the Hindi film debut of Tamil star Dhanush, alongside Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol. Set largely in the lanes of Varanasi, the film extended Rai's identification with North Indian milieus and was both a box-office success and a subject of cultural debate.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015) saw Kangana Ranaut play a double role and became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year. It is widely regarded as a high point of Rai's directorial work.
Zero and later work
Rai directed Zero (2018), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, in which Khan played a vertically challenged man from Meerut. The film received a mixed response. He returned to direction with Atrangi Re (2021), starring Akshay Kumar, Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan, which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar.
Production work
Through Colour Yellow Productions, Rai has backed films across genres, including Nil Battey Sannata (2016), Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016), Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), Manmarziyaan (2018), Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020) and Haseen Dillruba (2021), among others. The banner has been associated with films that foreground small-town settings, female protagonists or socially aware themes.
Style and themes
Rai's films are often set in cities and towns of Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Meerut and Jhajjar. His work frequently explores unequal romantic relationships, family pressures, marriage and the cultural texture of north Indian middle-class life. The use of local dialects, regional music and ensemble supporting characters is a recurring feature.
Significance
Rai is considered an important figure in the wave of Hindi filmmakers who, from the late 2000s onwards, shifted mainstream Bollywood's geographic focus from metropolitan settings to smaller cities. His collaborations with writer Himanshu Sharma have produced some of the most recognisable small-town romantic comedies of contemporary Hindi cinema, while Colour Yellow Productions has provided a platform for new directors and unconventional subjects.
