Background
Rail services in Saurashtra developed historically under the princely-era Bhavnagar State Railway, Gondal Railway and other small lines that were later amalgamated into the Saurashtra Railway after Indian independence. These lines were eventually absorbed into the Western Railway zone of Indian Railways. Amreli station forms part of this legacy network of metre-gauge routes in the peninsula, several of which have been progressively converted to broad gauge under the Indian Railways gauge conversion programme (Project Unigauge).
Significance
As the principal railway station of the district headquarters, Amreli station serves as an access point for travellers heading to the town's administrative offices, educational institutions and markets. It also supports movement of agricultural produce from the surrounding region, which is known for cotton and groundnut cultivation.
