Background

Koodiyattam is among the oldest continuously performed theatre traditions in the world, traditionally staged in temple theatres known as koothambalams. Performance has historically been the hereditary preserve of the Chakyar community, with the Ammannur family of Irinjalakuda regarded as one of the most important custodians of the art. The lineage produced the celebrated guru Ammannur Madhava Chakyar (1917–2008), whose teaching shaped the modern revival of the form.

Training and institutional context

Artists of the Ammannur lineage are typically trained from childhood in the rigorous repertoire of netra abhinaya (eye expression), rasa abhinaya, and the recitation of Sanskrit and Prakrit verses central to Koodiyattam. Much of this training in recent decades has been associated with the Ammannur Chachu Chakyar Smaraka Gurukulam in Irinjalakuda, an institution founded to ensure the transmission of the family tradition, and with Natanakairali, the centre for traditional arts established by G. Venu in the same town.

Significance

The continued activity of younger members of the Ammannur family, including Rajaneesh Chakyar, is significant for the survival of Koodiyattam, a tradition that depends on a small number of trained performers and accompanying Nangiar and Mizhavu artists. Performances are staged both within temple precincts in Kerala and at cultural festivals across India and abroad.
