Amla Junction is situated on the broad-gauge trunk route connecting Itarsi to Nagpur, which forms part of the principal Howrah–Mumbai rail corridor via Nagpur and Bhusawal. At Amla, a branch line diverges towards Chhindwara, giving the station its junction status. The station handles a mix of passenger, express and goods services.

The station lies in the Satpura range region of southern Madhya Pradesh. The town of Amla, which grew around the railway, hosts a sizeable railway colony and is also known for the presence of an Indian Air Force station in its vicinity.
