Background

The Amity group of universities operates campuses in several Indian states, with each campus established under the relevant state legislation governing private universities. The Mumbai campus was set up under a Maharashtra state enactment that conferred on it the status of a self-financed private university, empowering it to award its own degrees within the framework laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The university is situated outside the urban core of Mumbai, in the Raigad district to the south of the metropolitan area, allowing for a residential campus environment while remaining linked to the Mumbai region.

Academics

Amity University, Mumbai houses a number of constituent institutes and schools that organise teaching and research in their respective fields. Common areas of instruction across the Amity network, replicated at the Mumbai campus, include:

  • Engineering and technology
  • Business and management studies
  • Law and legal studies
  • Communication, journalism and media
  • Architecture and planning
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Sciences, including biotechnology and applied sciences
  • Liberal arts, social sciences and humanities

Programmes are typically offered at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, with curricula designed centrally across the Amity system but delivered through the Mumbai faculty.

Governance

As with other universities in the Amity network, the Mumbai campus is governed through statutory bodies such as a Board of Governors, an Executive Council and an Academic Council, with a Vice-Chancellor serving as the chief academic and administrative officer. The chancellorship is associated with the founding family of the Amity group.

Significance

The establishment of Amity University, Mumbai expanded the presence of private higher education in Maharashtra's Konkan belt and added to the cluster of universities serving the Mumbai metropolitan region. It forms part of a broader trend, since the early 2000s, of state legislatures in India authorising privately funded universities to supplement the capacity of public institutions in professional and technical education.
