Background

Amit Kumar was born into one of Indian cinema's most prominent film families. His paternal uncles, Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar, were established Hindi film actors, and his father Kishore Kumar was among the most influential playback singers of the twentieth century. His mother, Ruma Guha Thakurta, was a Bengali actress and the founder-conductor of the Calcutta Youth Choir, which gave Amit Kumar early exposure to both the Bombay film world and the Bengali musical tradition.

Playback singing

Amit Kumar emerged as a playback singer during the 1970s and gained wider recognition in the early 1980s. He sang for several leading composers of the era, including Rahul Dev Burman, with whom his father had a long creative partnership. He recorded songs for a range of Hindi films through the 1980s and 1990s, often providing voice for younger heroes of that period. His singing style is frequently noted for its tonal resemblance to that of Kishore Kumar, although he has cultivated his own approach in lighter and romantic numbers.

Bengali music
