Location

The station is situated between Shahad and Titwala on the Kalyan–Kasara stretch of the Central Line. It is located on the northern side of Kalyan junction and lies close to the Ulhas river. The surrounding area falls within the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal region of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Services

Ambivli is served primarily by suburban EMU local trains operated by Central Railway. Most services running between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) or Kalyan and Kasara halt at the station. Long-distance mail and express trains pass through Ambivli without stopping.

Layout

The station has platforms serving the up and down suburban lines along with through tracks used by mainline traffic. Access is provided via a foot overbridge connecting the platforms to the station entrances on either side of the railway track.

Background

The Central Line traces its origins to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR), whose Mumbai–Thane line of 1853 was India's first passenger railway and was extended progressively north-east towards Kasara and Bhusawal. Suburban electrification on the Mumbai end of this corridor was carried out in stages during the early twentieth century, and Ambivli developed as one of the wayside halts on the Kalyan–Kasara section.

Significance

The station provides commuter access for residents of Ambivli, Mohane and adjoining settlements to employment centres in Kalyan, Thane and the island city of Mumbai. Together with neighbouring stations on the Kalyan–Kasara stretch, it forms part of the daily commuter network that supports the rapid suburbanisation of the Kalyan–Dombivli–Titwala belt.
