Overview
Ambattur station is located in the western part of Chennai and primarily handles Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) suburban services that connect Chennai Central with Tiruvallur, Arakkonam and intermediate points. It is one of the busier intermediate halts on the West line of the Chennai suburban network, owing to the dense residential and industrial population it serves.
Background
The neighbourhood of Ambattur, historically a manufacturing and engineering hub, grew rapidly around the Ambattur Industrial Estate established in the mid-20th century. The railway station has long served as a key commuter link for workers travelling to and from the industrial estate as well as offices in central Chennai.
