Overview

Ambattur station is located in the western part of Chennai and primarily handles Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) suburban services that connect Chennai Central with Tiruvallur, Arakkonam and intermediate points. It is one of the busier intermediate halts on the West line of the Chennai suburban network, owing to the dense residential and industrial population it serves.

Background

The neighbourhood of Ambattur, historically a manufacturing and engineering hub, grew rapidly around the Ambattur Industrial Estate established in the mid-20th century. The railway station has long served as a key commuter link for workers travelling to and from the industrial estate as well as offices in central Chennai. Adjoining localities such as Korattur, Pattaravakkam, Ambattur OT (Old Town) and Padi rely on the station for daily commuting.

Layout and facilities

The station has multiple platforms serving suburban traffic on the Up and Down lines of the West suburban corridor. Standard amenities include ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines, foot overbridges, drinking water, seating and platform shelters. The station is integrated with local bus services and shared auto-rickshaws that connect to nearby residential and industrial areas.

Services

Suburban EMU services that halt at Ambattur typically operate between:

  • Chennai Central and Tiruvallur
  • Chennai Central and Arakkonam
  • Chennai Beach and Tiruvallur/Arakkonam (via the Beach–Tambaram link in some services)

Most long-distance express and mail trains pass through the station without stopping.

Significance

Ambattur station is significant as a commuter gateway to one of Chennai's largest industrial belts, the Ambattur Industrial Estate, which houses numerous engineering, automotive ancillary and IT firms. The station also supports residential commuter traffic from a densely populated catchment that includes parts of the Ambattur, Madhavaram and Tiruvallur taluks.
