Background
Rayudu was born in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh and rose through Indian age-group cricket as a prodigy in the early 2000s. He captained the India Under-19 side and was identified early as one of the most promising young batsmen in the country. He made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy and went on to become a long-serving member of the side, scoring heavily in domestic competitions including the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Career
Early career and ICL stint
After breaking into Hyderabad's senior team as a teenager, Rayudu had a brief association with the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League (ICL) before returning to the official BCCI fold once an amnesty was offered to ICL players. His return to mainstream domestic cricket revived his prospects of national selection.
Indian Premier League
Rayudu was signed by Mumbai Indians and became an integral part of the franchise's middle order for several seasons. He was part of Mumbai Indians' title-winning campaigns in the IPL and the Champions League Twenty20. He later moved to Chennai Super Kings, where he continued as a top-order and middle-order batsman and contributed to the franchise's further IPL successes.
International career
Rayudu made his ODI debut for India in 2013 and went on to play limited-overs cricket across multiple seasons. He featured in bilateral series at home and abroad and was used predominantly in the middle order, often at number four. He also represented India in Twenty20 Internationals. He scored ODI centuries during his international career and was part of India's plans across several ICC events leading up to the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, although he was not selected in the final squad for the tournament.
Retirement
Rayudu announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019. He continued to play in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings before retiring from the league after the 2023 season, ending his professional career on the back of another title-winning campaign with the franchise.
Significance
Rayudu is remembered for his longevity in Indian domestic cricket, his consistent performances for Hyderabad over more than a decade, and his role as a reliable middle-order batsman in two of the most successful IPL franchises. His career trajectory — from teenage prodigy and Under-19 captain through a controversial ICL phase, return to BCCI cricket, and eventual senior India selection — is often cited as an example of perseverance in Indian first-class cricket.
