Background

The station takes its name from Amarda Road, a settlement in the Jaleswar–Baripada region of Mayurbhanj. The area is historically associated with the Amarda Road Airfield, a World War II–era airstrip developed by the Allied forces, which was connected by rail through this station for the movement of personnel and supplies during the 1940s.

The Kharagpur–Cuttack railway line, on which the station lies, was constructed by the Bengal Nagpur Railway in the late nineteenth century as part of the strategic east coast rail link between Howrah and Madras (now Chennai). After Indian independence and the reorganisation of the Indian Railways, the line came under the South Eastern Railway zone.

Services

Amarda Road handles passenger services on the Howrah–Chennai corridor. As a wayside station in a predominantly rural belt, it primarily serves passenger and a limited number of express trains, while higher-priority services pass through without halting. Goods movement on the line includes mineral and industrial freight associated with the broader eastern industrial region.

Significance

The station provides rail access to parts of northern Mayurbhanj district, an area otherwise dependent on road connections to district headquarters at Baripada and to Balasore. Its position on the trunk route linking Kolkata with Bhubaneswar and southern India gives it continued operational relevance despite its small size.
