Overview
Alwar Junction is one of the principal railway stations in the Mewat–Shekhawati region of north-eastern Rajasthan. It is situated on the broad-gauge trunk route connecting Delhi with Jaipur, and also serves as the junction for a branch line linking Alwar with Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The station handles a mix of long-distance express trains, intercity services and passenger trains, and is among the busier stations in the Jaipur division in terms of originating and passing traffic.
History
The line through Alwar was developed in the late nineteenth century as part of the rail link between Delhi and the princely state capital of Jaipur, then operated under the Rajputana–Malwa Railway system that worked the metre-gauge networks of Rajputana. Alwar, capital of the former princely state of Alwar, became an important intermediate halt on this corridor.
Following the post-Independence reorganisation of Indian Railways, the station came under the Northern Railway zone, and later, with the formation of the North Western Railway zone in 2002, it was transferred to the Jaipur division of NWR. The Delhi–Jaipur route was converted from metre gauge to broad gauge as part of Project Unigauge, and the corridor was subsequently electrified, supporting electric traction on through services.
Layout and facilities
The station has multiple platforms with foot overbridges connecting them, along with standard passenger amenities such as waiting rooms, a reservation counter, retiring rooms, and parking on the city side. The route through Alwar is double-tracked and electrified, and forms part of the broader corridor linking the National Capital Region with Jaipur and onwards to Ajmer and western Rajasthan.
Services
Alwar Junction is served by Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Intercity, Superfast, Mail/Express and passenger trains operating on the Delhi–Jaipur–Ajmer route, in addition to services running on the Alwar–Mathura branch. The station also caters to commuter traffic between Alwar and Delhi, with several daily services connecting it to Delhi, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin.
Significance
The station is the principal rail gateway to Alwar district and to nearby tourist destinations including Sariska Tiger Reserve, Bhangarh Fort, Bala Quila and the city's heritage precincts associated with the erstwhile Alwar State. Its position roughly midway between Delhi and Jaipur also makes it an important operational point on one of the busiest trunk routes in north-western India.
