Overview
Aluva is one of the busiest railway stations in central Kerala and acts as a major boarding and alighting point for passengers travelling to and from Kochi. The station is located close to the Periyar river and is well integrated with the surrounding road network, making it a convenient interchange for commuters from the northern and eastern suburbs of the Kochi region.
Connectivity
The station is connected to other forms of transport in the city. The Aluva metro station of the Kochi Metro is located in the vicinity and serves as the northern terminus of the metro's first operational line, providing onward connectivity towards the Kochi central business district. The KSRTC bus station and a private bus stand at Aluva are also located nearby, enabling road-based connections across Kerala.
The Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is located a short distance from the station, and Aluva is one of the closest railway stops for air passengers using the airport.
Services
Aluva is a halt for a large number of long-distance express and superfast trains running between Kerala and other parts of India, in addition to passenger and MEMU services on the Shoranur–Ernakulam corridor. Major trains running on the Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai/Bengaluru–Ernakulam routes use the station.
Significance
Owing to its proximity to industrial areas around Aluva and Kalamassery, the airport at Nedumbassery, and the educational institutions of the region, the station handles substantial commuter traffic in addition to long-distance travellers. The annual Sivarathri festival on the banks of the Periyar at Aluva Manappuram further increases passenger footfall during the festival period.
