Background
Kannanthanam hails from Kerala and entered public service through the Indian Administrative Service. Over the course of his administrative career he held assignments connected with literacy, urban administration and land reform, before transitioning into electoral politics.
Administrative career
As an IAS officer, he was associated with the total literacy campaign in Kottayam district of Kerala, which became a widely cited example of district-level literacy mobilisation in India. He later served in the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), where his drive against unauthorised constructions in the national capital brought him significant public attention and the nickname "Demolition Man".
Political career
Kannanthanam first entered the legislature as an Independent Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, representing a constituency in central Kerala, with support from the Left Democratic Front. He subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha as a member representing Rajasthan on a BJP ticket. During the second term of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government's predecessor council of ministers, he was inducted as Union Minister of State with Independent Charge of the Ministry of Tourism, a portfolio he held until the conclusion of that ministry's term.

Apart from his administrative and political work, Kannanthanam is the author of books drawing on his experiences in public administration, including reflections on governance and land reform in India.
